Khalid al Hamad= Syria’s “cannibal commander” A militia leader filmed cutting the heart and organs out of a regime soldier’s corpse and putting it in his mouth has defended his actions as legitimate
.

The actions of Khaled al-Hamad, known by the nom de guerre Abu Sakkar, handed an instant propaganda victory to the Syrian govenrment, which accused the West of ignoring rebel atrocities.

The video purported to show the leader of a breakaway rebel faction cutting the lungs out of a soldier’s corpse before apparently eating a small piece of the organ.

”I swear to God we will eat your hearts, Alawite soldiers of Bashar the dog,” he said, referring to supporters of President Bashar al-Assad from the minority Alawite sect.

Speaking to Time magazine, he said had no regrets about taking revenge – “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” – after finding images of regime abuses on the dead soldier’s mobile phone.

“We opened his cell phone and I found a clip of a woman and her two daughters fully naked, and he was humiliating them,” he said.

European Command leader Admiral James Stavridis has confirmed that the US and other NATO member nations are engaged in joint planning for the possibility of military intervention in Syria’s Civil War.

The admiral says the US would be “prepared if called upon to be engaged as we were in Libya,” and said that there is “a great deal of discussion” of trying to impose a no-fly zone over Syria.

Of course, the “no-fly zone” in Libya almost immediately morphed into a full scale air war to impose regime change on Libya, which NATO eventually did, leaving Libya the mess of militant factions it is today. Somehow this is being considered a model to reproduce in Syria.

That may just be the tip of the iceberg, with Sen. Lindsay Graham (R – SC) talking up the possibility of invading Syria outright, insisting US “boots on the ground” are necessary to seize Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal, and to install the rebels as the new government.

Americans tour base to recruit Libyan anti-militant force: commander

TRIPOLI | Tue Nov 6, 2012 2:22pm EST

(Reuters) – U.S. officials in Libya have begun to look for recruits for a commando force which they plan to train to fight militants, a former commander of Libyan rebels who toppled Muammar Gaddafi said on Tuesday.

There was no immediate U.S. comment. After a wave of anti-American violence in the Arab world in September during which the U.S. ambassador to Libya died in an Islamist militant attack, President Barack Obama took measures to improve the security of U.S. diplomatic installations in the region.

A team of about 10 Americans from the embassy in Tripoli visited a paramilitary base in the eastern city of Benghazi 10 days ago to interview and get to know potential recruits, according to militia commander Fathi al-Obeidi.

“The American team asked us for a tour of our base and we granted them permission to walk around freely,” he told Reuters.

“They stood with many of our men taking down information. They asked them about their ages, backgrounds, their tribal loyalties. They wanted to know what kind of training they had received, if any.”

Obeidi is a commander with Libya’s Shield, an umbrella group for various armed militias that refused to join the official army after the war that ousted Gaddafi last year, saying it was still being run by Gaddafi loyalists.

He also helped a team of U.S. marines in September lead a rescue effort that saved a group of Americans hiding in a safe house after an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in which U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens died.

Obeidi said the interviewers also took note of the types of uniforms the men were wearing and asked about their opinion on security in Libya.

He said that the team of American officials included current U.S. charge d’affaires Laurence Pope and the future head trainer of the Libyan special forces team.

“I’ve been asked to help pick about 400 of these young men between the ages of 19 and 25 to train for this force,” he said. “They could be trained either in Libya or abroad.”

The force may be required to fight jihadi militants like those accused in the September 11 assault on the consulate.

ATTACK BECAME ELECTION ISSUE

Obama moved after the September violence to beef up protection of U.S. diplomatic installations in the Arab world, sending in Marine contingents to several embassies and temporarily reducing the number of U.S. personnel at some posts.

The consulate assault became a highly politicized issue in the U.S. presidential election campaign, with Republican challenger Mitt Romney accusing Obama of taking weeks to acknowledge that the incident was a “terrorist” attack, rather than violence prompted by anger over an anti-Islam film.

It occurred during a wave of Muslim protest across the Arab world over the film produced in California, which also sparked violence against U.S. diplomatic missions in Tunisia and Egypt.

However, official emails obtained by Reuters showed that the White House and State Department were advised two hours after the consulate attack that an Islamist militant group had claimed responsibility.

Obama and other U.S. officials have acknowledged that the attack was a “terrorist” act by militants with suspected links to al Qaeda affiliates or sympathizers.

He also vowed to bring to justice those responsible for the Benghazi attack.

But Washington may struggle to decide whom to target. The increasingly diffuse nature of al Qaeda, its allies and sympathizers complicates the job of identifying precisely which individuals and groups were behind the attacks.

A commander of foreign-sponsored Syrian insurgents has been killed by members of his own armed group, who turned against him in the southwestern city of Dara’a.

Rabea Swaidan was fatally shot in the city, located about 114 kilometers (70 miles) south of Damascus, on Saturday by his own gunmen after they got into a bitter dispute with him over the distribution of stolen property and the money they received from abroad to fund their insurgency and other illegal activities, the SANA news agency reported.

It is said that Swaidan personally supervised the looting of houses and cars, armed robberies, abductions, and the extortion of local residents in Dara’a.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011.

Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country and accuses Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey of arming the opposition.

Fierce clashes continue between government troops and foreign-backed insurgents across Syria as there is no let-up in the violence that has been gripping Syria for the past 18 months, Press TV reports.

Syrian army forces have killed a militant commander, Jameel Sharem, in Bustan al-Qasr district of the flashpoint northern city of Aleppo.

Heavy fighting is underway in several neighborhoods of the city including al-Midan, Bab al-Hadid and Bustan al-Qasr. Seven insurgents and two soldiers were also wounded in the Sunday clashes in the city.

Meanwhile, a number of insurgents have died and dozens more have been hurt in Idlib. Two Syrian troops were also killed and 8 more wounded in fighting in the northwestern city.

Similar bloody confrontations have been reported in the cities of Homs, Hama and Daraa where a number of insurgents have been killed. However, the situation is calm in the capital city, Damascus.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and insurgents are behind the unrest, while the opposition accuses the security forces of killing protesters.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals.

Roadside bombs kill Afghan police commander, councilmen
1 April 2012, 17:47 (GMT+05:00)

Roadside bombs in southern Afghanistan have killed an Afghan police commander, another officer and three provincial councilmen, officials said on Sunday, DPA reported.

The three separate roadside bombings took place in Uruzgan province, when the victims’ vehicles struck bombs planted by militants, the officials said.

On Sunday noon, a roadside bomb struck a police vehicle in Trinkot, the provincial capital of Uruzgan province, killing Tor Jan, a police commander along with fellow police officer, Farid Ayel, the provincial governor spokesman said.

He said that Tor Jan was on a patrol when the bomb planted by Taliban militants along the road was detonated remotely.

Separately, in Gezab district of the same province, two roadside bombs struck two vehicles carrying the district’s local council members, killing three of them and injuring two others, Sayed Hamdard, Uruzgan’s governor spokesman said.

Hamdard blamed Taliban militants for the bombing but the militants were not immediately available for comment.
