North Korea has entered a “state of war” against its Southern neighbor, stating that from now on any issues between the two countries will be resolved in a “wartime manner.”

“From this time on, the North-South relations will be entering the state of war and all issues raised between the North and the South will be handled accordingly,” a special statement by the country’s top military command reads, according to the KCNA state news agency.
“The situation in the Korean Peninsula, which is neither peace nor war, has come to an end,” the statement says.

However, technically, the two Koreas are still in state of war since a peace treaty after the 1950-53 conflict had never been signed.

Washington “should be clear that in era of Marshal Kim Jong-un, the greatest-ever commander, all things are different from the past,” went a statement on North Korean radio early Saturday.
Meanwhile the White House is taking the fresh North Korean threats seriously, but not without a bit of skepticism.

“We’ve seen reports of a new and unconstructive statement from North Korea,” said Caitlin Hayden, spokeswoman for the National Security Council. “We take these threats seriously and remain in close contact with our South Korean allies.”

Russia warns US, North Korea muscle-flexing slipping into ‘vicious cycle’

With North Korea placing its ballistic arsenal on high alert targeting American bases and the US tenaciously increasing military presence in the region, the whole situation risks “spiraling out of control” soon, warned Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov.

Both North Korea and the US bear responsibility for the recent substantial escalation of tensions, Lavrov said on Friday, calling on “all sides not to flex their military muscle.”

“We are concerned that alongside the adequate, collective reaction of the UN Security Council, unilateral action is being taken around North Korea that is increasing military activity,” Lavrov added, apparently referring to US plans to boost missile defense against the North, the joint US-South Korean contingency plan in the event of an attack as well as their recent military drills.
In a noteworthy contrast to all the previous war games, this time American B-2 bombers flew over 10,000 kilometers to stage a mock bombing of Korean soil, in a move that US officials confirmed to be unprecedented.

Following this “reckless provocation” North Korean military command held an urgent overnight meeting during which the state’s supreme leader Kim Jong-un signed a decree placing the Strategic Rocket Force on standby.

“The situation could simply get out of control,” Sergey Lavrov told journalists on Friday, calling for a resumption of a six-party discussion of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal within the framework of country’s international obligations.

While N. Korea has firmly pledged to “settle accounts with the US imperialists” and “mercilessly strike the US mainland, their stronghold, their military bases” in case of any further provocations, US officials seemingly do not consider the threat to be as real as the democratic republic is trying to present it to be.

The threats towards the US are only hurting North Korea itself as well as its people, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Friday.

“The bellicose rhetoric emanating from North Korea only deepens that nation’s isolation,” Earnest said, adding that North’s unconditional renouncement of nuclear arms is the only clear path to resolve the situation.

Despite all the tensions, the United States is capable of defending its interests in the region, Earnest added.
Propaganda or serious threat?

Military experts agree that North Korea is at least several years from building a nuclear warhead or a missile capable of reaching the mainland US, which makes the threats, at this point, groundless.

However, a detailed plan of a nuclear strike on the US mainland can be clearly seen behind the North Korean leader on photos published in national newspaper. Such a demonstration of nuclear capabilities is likely aimed at an internal audience, in support of the idea of “sweeping away the US aggressors.”

Nevertheless, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel admitted on Thursday that “every provocative, bellicose word and action” of Kim Jong-un has to be taken seriously.
Earlier this month Washington decided to address North Korea’s faster-than-anticipated progress in nuclear weapons development, announcing that the US will have 14 missile interceptors up and running by 2017, even abandoning a key part of its Eastern European missile defense plan in order to curb the threat from North Korea.

Libya Closes Borders, Declares Much of South a ‘Military Zone’

Military Given Supreme Authority in Six Provinces

by Jason Ditz, December 16, 2012

The Libyan National Congress (LNC) has announced that it is closing its southern and eastern borders for an indefinite period of time, and that it is declaring six provinces, covering the bulk of the south, a “closed military zone.”

The LNC decree went on to give the Defense Ministry the power to impose a military governor on each of the six provinces, with unchecked power to arrest people and deport “illegal immigrants.”

Southern provinces have been increasingly embroiled in tribal clashes in recent months, and many of the southern representatives to the LNC were boycotting the body when it declared their regions under military rule.

The government’s official statement cited an increased flow of “illegal immigrants in the expectation of eventual international military action in Mali” as the justification for its move, though it isn’t clear how much of the fighting has anything to do with factions in Azawad.

Mulls Over Bani Walid Attack
Posted: 2012/10/01
From: Mathaba

http://www.mathaba.net/news/?x=631676
With Benghazi all but declaring itself independent, Tripoli resistance resurging, Sebha, Ghat, Brak all showing numerous successes against rat forces, now the regime is faced with what to do about Bani Walid, yet again

The “rats” are in dire confusion, panic, and unable to form a government that has any credibility. With top military generals, even top U.S. officials and agents in the country losing their lives to the resistance, the regime heads know that they’re next in line.

Increasing divisions have left the regime of the so-called Prime Minister trying to form a government even weaker, Jibril abandoned by his own party members, and CIA agent and ‘Congress’ head Magarief calling for Libya to become a secular country without Qur’an as Law.

Islamist militias ganging up with the popular resistance in a Jihad which Muammar Qaddafi called for, and the popular masses gaining confidence across the country and even openly celebrating Al-Fateh and the victories in Benghazi, with pro-Qadhafi Al-Fateh slogans.

The main terror wing of the regime, the Supreme Security Committee in open fights with the regime which has abandoned it, a weak national army, a police force in full mutiny, while a British “Deputy Editor” has a hard time smoking shisha and drinking coffee.

Americans telling the regime what to do, the regime unable to implement those directives, the media now totally silent over Ghat, Sebha, the south of Libya, and truing to put a brave face and twist the fact in the east and west, what is happening at the centre, in Bani Walid?

Open display of Jamahiriya flags, open resistance, and clashes with so-called “Libya Shield Forces” at checkpoints, and continued defiance of the regime. Now the occupation regime is faced with a hard choice, what to do about Bani Walid?

Their current solution lies once again in using the murderous terrorists of Misrata. Reports indicate they intend to give the orders to the Misrata militias to attack Bani Walid. The problem is these militias are allegedly supposed to be under the National Army.

And the National Army, the Libyan masses, even those who are not engage in resistance, expect to be there to protect Libyans, not to oppress and massacre them. So if the militia in Misrata, which now belong to the army, attack Bani Walid, the whole plot unravels.

The regime is thus left with no support among the people, a weak national army, and militias which for the most part are unreliable with only the Misrata militia and a few other small ones left to do the dirty work, with many islamist brigades now in open war with the regime.

“We are waiting for the command of the army chief of Staff Yusuf Mangoush“, Misrata Local Council chief Saleem Baitelamal said this afternoon October 1st. “The situation is that all militias belonging to the army have been alerted. All are ready.”

And the occupation government is even still calling upon the Supreme Security Committee, which is out of control and now in limbo, with “Interior Minister” Fawzi Abdelali today saying on rat television that an order had been issued to the SSC, which is still separate from the national army and tasked with “security” (terrorising the people), to prepare itself for a possible assault on Bani Walid.

On Tuesday, CIA agent Megarief’s “National Congress” issued an ultimatum to Bani Walid to hand over those suspected of involvement in the killing of rat Omran Shaban, the Misratan “first credited with discovering Muammar Qaddafi in a drainage pipe in Sirte last October.”

The “Congress” voted overwhelmingly in favour of a motion authorising the ministries of interior and defence to “use all necessary measures to arrest the suspects” — the deadline expires 5 October.

Yet the “Prime Minister” is at odds with these pronouncements saying that “no action has been authorised against Bani Walid and no mobilization order issued”, in an attempt to distance the occupation regime from any action that it gives the militia in off-record orders.

Shaban had been killed in Bani Walid after being sent there as part of an effort to retrieve some journalist spies from Misrata who had been captured in Bani Walid.

Foreign occupation media says reports of a “sizeable invasion force” mustered at the front line checkpoint of Bir Durfan, around 20km NE of Bani Walid are false, with the British propaganda publication “Libya Herald” having claimed to have visited the area.

The Libya Herald is a publication tasked with creating pro-occupation regime anti-Qadhafi and anti-Jamahiriya propaganda under the guise of independent journalism, and feeding western media outlets with fake and “spun” news reports.

In this it has been successful due to the western media outlets requiring only something which they can later pin the blame on others (Libya Herald), however the direct readership of the Libya Herald remains miniscule and it complains of Mathaba’s wide reach.

The occupation regime is apparently hoping that the “threat of force” against Bani Walid will be enough for them to hand over the alleged suspects who carried out justice against the rat from Misrata, however they are clearly being naive.

As much as Bani Walid has suffered what most people in the world would not have the strength to endure, the news has spread fast around Libya about the weakness of the regime, the inability of its foreign backers to protect it, or even their own key personnel.

The resistance has continued to grow and adapt, developed networks and communications, renewed its strength and endless motivations, fired by the desire of every true Libyan Muslim to free his or her land from the rats and crusaders, and to exact revenge on the traitors.

The Twitter micro blog service is taking measures to fight racism and trolling on the platform. Abusive comments will be hidden.
The company’s Chief executive Dick Costolo told the Financial Times that the scale of hate speech, abusive and insulting messages is intimidating.
Twitter will fight trollers and hate instigators by hiding their messages if their accounts have no followers, user information or user picture.
Measures are being introduced after the British police initiated an investigation into racist messages against English football team players, who lost to the Italians on Sunday in the quarterfinals of Euro 2012, the BBC reports.
Despite the difficulties with abusive and racist speech Twitter executives believe it is crucial for the service to maintain freedom of speech. Thus they will still allow pseudonyms.
“The reason we want to allow pseudonyms is there are lots of places in the world where it’s the only way you’d be able to speak freely,” Dick Costolo is quoted as saying. “The flip side of that is it also emboldens these trolls… How do you make sure you are both emboldening people to speak politically but making it OK to be on the platform and not endure all this hate speech? It’s very frustrating.”
Abuse in Twitter has provoked complaints from many celebrities, sportsmen among them.
Hate speech in Twitter has already brought some to justice. In March a court in England convicted student Liam Stacey for his racist Twitter post about footballer Fabrice Muamba.

The hunt for Trayvon Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, has reached cyberspace.
This past Saturday a Twitter account with the handle “@KillZimmerman” was created.
According to the user’s Twitter page, “this page is 4 da ppl who believe Zimmerman should be shot dead in the street the same way Travyvon was,” the bio reads.
The account has caught some attention gaining 440 followers.
Since the account began, 454 tweets have been sent.
Although most of the tweets are in defense to people requesting the person behind the account delete the profile, a message sent by @KillZimmerman has stated “every1 is going to die one day sum ppl deserve to die today #killzimmerman.”
Zimmerman, who was the self-proclaimed neighborhood watchman shot and killed the 17-year-old Martin on February 26.

Despite many requests to delete the account, Twitter refused to do so. The only comment they offered was “no comment.”

“We don’t comment on specific users or the status of accounts for privacy reasons,” reads the company’s statement.

“Privacy reasons” didn’t stop Twitter in the past from deleting or suspending various accounts for relatively minor offenses like spamming celebrates.

RT’s regular guest, blogger David Seaman had his Twitter account temporarily shut down. This after trying to draw the attention of popular micro-bloggers to issues like legalized indefinite detention and torture of Americans under NDAA and the Occupy Wall Street movement. But in the @KillZimmerman case the online giant refused to take down the account urging to kill a person without prosecution.

Some groups and politicians have called for the arrest of Zimmerman including The New Black Panther Party.

The black political organization called upon a militia of black volunteers to help capture Trayvon’s murderer.

As RT reported, the Panthers have begun posting flyers calling for Zimmerman’s capture “dead or alive” and are offering a reward of $ 10,000 to the person who captures him. Reportedly the bounty increased to $ 1 million on Wednesday.

“George Zimmerman was not a police officer he was a community volunteer,” said Mikhail Muhammad, Southern Regional Director of the New Black Panther Party.

Earlier this week a video showing Zimmerman in police custody surfaced. Many see the footage as proof that Zimmerman’s allegations of self-defense are false.

In the recording a handcuffed Zimmerman appears to be injury free and many non-believers of the self-defense story claim if Trayvon punched him in the face and slam his head on the concrete his face would show it.

According to Reuters, “Zimmerman’s lawyers insist the footage is too grain to prove anything.”
Some believe the video showing Zimmerman unimpaired will simply spark more demand for vigilante justice.

“It’s time for us as black men to take justice in our own hands,” said Muhammad just outside the neighborhood where Martin was gunned down.
The sender’s tweets also echo The New Black Panther’s message, “No Justice No Peace!!!!!!!!!!”

Turkish Court Takes Monastery’s Land, Declares Assyrians ‘Occupiers’

By , June 29, 2012 4:05 am
Posted GMT 6-29-2012 5:52:52

(AINA) — The final decision of the [Turkish] Supreme Court of Cassation in the legal case of St. Gabriel, ordering it to transfer the lands which the monastery has owned for 14 centuries to the State Treasury marks a major legal scandal. Cynically, it was the same institution which in 1974 ruled against the [non-Muslim] minority foundations in Turkey and has played an important role in intensifying minority problems. The latest ruling, in which the State is designated as the ‘land owner’ and the ‘other’ (being St.Gabriel) as the ‘occupier’ proves that not much has changed in Turkey’s policy towards minorities. The court decision sheds light on an important parameter of the process that has been labeled as “democratization.”

The confiscation of properties, trusts and estates of non-Muslim minorities by the government or by third parties is one of the darkest pages in the history of the [Turkish] Republic. Even though the Law of Foundations has been subject to various revisions within the framework of EU reforms over the last ten years, due to the nationalistic understanding that aims to preserve the existing status quo, the problems of minority foundations have not received a profound and lasting solution. This is very much related to the hegemonic perception that has been formed historically towards minorities in Turkey. Minorities, as a group in Turkey, have been regarded not only as infidel [Turkish gavur] for many years, but also as groups that foster secret ambitions, who “have stolen the wealth that belonged to us,” or as “hostile” and “unreliable” element within the Turkish nation formation. The deep traces of such institutionalized discourses can be read in the reflexes of the judicial and political authorities in the context of the legal trials of Hrant Dink, St. Gabriel and Publishing House.

Many people have written about the St. Gabriel case and the trial has been well documented (full coverage). But what is striking in this case is that the legal procedure started and concluded to the disadvantage of the monastery during a process which has been hailed as transition towards “democratization” by many people. Turkish elites have preached continously that “many things have changed in Turkey, and matters are no longer as they were.” However, the case of the monastery is just another example which proves the opposite.

Unfortunately, while many in Turkey did not know much about Assyrians [known as Süryani in Turkey], they got to learn about them thanks to the St. Gabriel trial. Despite being a non-Muslim minority according to the definition of the Lousanne Treaty, the Assyrians have not received any legal status throughout the history of the Republic. Policies of denial and assimilation have resulted in the loss of cultural identity, excluding them from political participation for decades while institutionalizing their third class status. With the beginning of the EU accession process in Turkey, they started to be remembered and rediscovered afresh as an exotic culture. Within the framework of the rediscovery phenomenon, Assyrians have been converted to a ‘touristic object’ on one hand, while on the other hand the state presented them as an example of its generous “tolerance.”

The challenges brought to St. Gabriel during the judicial process need to be understood in close relation to the unfair and discriminatory practices Assyrians are facing in Turkey. Beside the fundamental problems of identity and legal status, in recent years efforts have been made to systematically label them with the description of the others and to display them as an elemet of threat. Their monasteries are presented as “missionary centers.” In history textbooks, approved by the Ministry of Education and used in 10th grade high school classes, Assyrians are portrayed as “traitors” during World War I (AINA 10-2-2011). Furthermore, Dogan Bekin, a writer of the National Newspaper (Milli Gazete), recently categorized Assyrians as an “Israeli-type group” which has ambitions to establish a country through land acquisition.

Isn’t it quite strange that even before the ink of Dogan Bekin’s article could dry, the Supreme Court of Cassation signed a decision in that same spirit? In order to understand whether these types of explanations and decisions reflect a state-oriented principal policy towards Assyrians, we need to look at the stance of the AKP [Justice and Development Party] government. It is a fact that under the leadership of the populist AK Party in Turkey some steps were taken on many issues regarding “democratization” and that the military wardship disappeared, which had existed for decades. However, it is also a fact that there has been no progress in terms of reducing alienation of non-Muslim minorities, particularly in the dominant approach of suspicion towards them. The attitude of the government and the Turkish judiciary system in the context of the lawsuits filed againts the monastery of St. Gabriel are the most important testimony for this.

The recent developments in the case of St. Gabriel remind us directly of the case of Hrant Dink, who was killed in 2006. Interestingly, in both cases the Turkish government took shelter under the pretext of “We cannot intervene in the judiciary” and “the judiciary makes its own independent decisions,” hence sidelining the issues based on blatant unwillingness to solve the problem.

As pointed out by Professor Baskin Oran, who closely follows the case of St. Gabriel, the party representing the state treasury against the monastery is under the control of the government and is composed of appointed bureaucrats. If the Turkish government wanted to demonstrate a good faith approach, the problems that St. Gabriel monastery has been facing could easily be resolved. But the stance pursued by the Turkish executive powers with regards to this case reveals the existence of deep politics. While the Assyrians on the one hand are being punished with this case, on the other hand homage to a post-modern Turkish supremacy culture is dictated to them.

The punishment part of the job is related to the increasingly institutionalized genocide (Seyfo in Assyrian) recognition activities Assyrians in the Diaspora in recent years. This obviously creates discontent among Turkish ruling elites, a relationship many Assyrian activists have been pointing to. Through this case, the message is conveyed to the Assyrians is “Look, we are becoming a democracy, writing a new constitution. But you as a minority, however, you have to know your boundaries. Stop dealing with issues such as the genocide!”

If the Turkish government is willing to solve the historically shaped problems of minorities in a sincere manner, it needs to start taking positive steps in the aforementioned key cases and should regard improvements in how minorities are perceived as essential work of peace, reconciliation and democratization. Otherwise, everyone has the right to question whether anything has really changed in Turkey.

Israel declares Guenter Grass persona non grata

Israel has declared German author Guenter Grass a persona non grata, after a critical poem published by the Nobel laureate described Tel Aviv as a threat to world peace.

On Sunday, Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai barred Grass from entering the entity and accused him of fuelling the fire of hate against Tel Aviv.

In the poem titled “What Must Be Said,” which was published in the German daily Suddeutsche Zeitung on Wednesday, Grass accused Israel of threatening world peace.

“Why do I say only now … that the nuclear power Israel endangers an already fragile world peace? Because that must be said which may already be too late to say tomorrow,” Grass wrote.

The 85-year-old author says Iran is in danger of a nuclear attack from Israel and expresses concern over the consequences of the zionist regime attempting to carry out an act of aggression against Iran.

“We could be suppliers to a crime that can be foreseen, which is why none of the usual excuses would erase it,” Grass writes, referring to Germany’s plan to sell Israel a sixth nuclear-capable Dolphin-class submarine.

The poem has drawn the ire of the Israeli regime. The Israeli embassy in Berlin issued a statement on Wednesday, saying the entity is “not prepared to assume the role that Gunter Grass assigns us.”

Israel is the only possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East and it has never allowed inspections of its nuclear facilities nor has it joined the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) based on its policy of nuclear ambiguity.

According to a survey conducted in 2011 by the Berlin-based Friedrich Ebert Foundation, more than 50 percent of the European people believe Israel is the most serious threat to global security.
