* Government seeks alternatives to Strait of Hormuz

BAGHDAD, Feb. 18 (AKnews) – The Iraqi government will look to develop other means of exporting oil, away from the Strait of Hormuz, amid escalating tensions between the West and Iran. The government has reversed it’s position after the Iraqi State Oil Marketing Company declared weeks ago that the government had no intention of developing alternative solutions if Iran closed the strait.

Iran is threatening closure in response to European Union sanctions banning all new export oil contracts with the country over its nuclear program.

“The Ministry of Planning is working to develop a strategy with the Ministry of Oil to prevent any damage for Iraq’s oil exports if Iran closed the strait,” said Ali Shukri, Minister of Planning and member of the Economic Committee, on Thursday.

“Alternatives include using oil tankers through Jordan and Turkey and expanding the capacity of oil pipelines from Kirkuk to Ceyhan port in Turkey.”

The strait is the only sea passage connecting the oil-rich countries in the Gulf – Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates – to the open ocean and the world.

About 20% of the world’s oil passes through this point and about 1.7m out of 2.2m barrels of Iraqi oil are exported daily using the busy shipping lane.

In addition to a gradual ban on Iranian oil phased through to July, the EU also want to impose sanctions on Tehran’s Central Bank to cut off funding to its nuclear program.
