Syria Slams ‘hostile’ France As Fighting Rages

By , November 19, 2012 3:49 am

DAMASCUS/BEIRUT — Syria Sunday slammed as “hostile” a French decision to host an ambassador from the opposition National Coalition, as regime forces bombarded southern districts of the capital and rebels claimed to capture a key military base in the country’s north.

France Saturday invited the group to send an envoy to Paris, after President Francois Hollande met National Coalition leader Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib.

France, the first Western state to recognize the opposition National Coalition as the sole representative of the Syrian people, will also ask the European Union to lift an arms embargo for the rebels Monday.

“France is acting like a hostile nation,” National Reconciliation Minister Ali Haidar told AFP on a visit to key ally Tehran.

“It’s as if it wants to go back to the time of the occupation,” he added, speaking of the French mandate in Syria after World War I.

Haidar was speaking as Tehran prepared to host talks between Syrian officials and opposition groups tolerated by President Bashar Assad’s regime.

No National Coalition representatives were invited to the Iran talks.

“Invitations were extended to all those who accept dialogue, not to those who refuse to talk as a matter of principle,” Haidar said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi warned against sending weapons to the rebels, saying this would threaten regional stability and increase the “risk of terrorism.”

Russia reiterated its alignment with Iran on the issue of providing the coalition with weapons.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned, in a message to the Tehran meeting, against the risk of weapons ending up in the hands of “Al-Qaeda and other extremist groups” seeking to seize Syria, Iranian official media reported.

The opposition coalition, formed in Doha on Nov. 11, is committed to building a transitional government composed of representatives of all ethnic and religious groups in conflict-ridden Syria.

Turkey and the Gulf Arab states have also officially recognized it, and Britain’s Foreign Secretary William Hague said Friday London was considering following suit.

But the group refuses to engage with the Damascus regime before Assad’s departure.

Despite the offer to host an envoy, Paris remained cautious on the issue of supplying weapons to Syrian rebels amid fears of the conflict spreading.

The post of National Coalition envoy to France is to be filled by academic Monzer Makhous, although it was unclear if this would happen before a planned provisional government is formed.

Coalition chief Khatib in Paris Saturday repeated the group’s promise to build a government of technocrats rather than politicians. “There is no problem. The coalition exists, and we will launch a call for candidates to form a government of technocrats that will work until the regime falls,” he told reporters.

But he appeared to have made little progress on his call for the West to arm the insurgency.

“The [rebel] Syrians need military means but the international community also has to exercise control,” Hollande said.

He acknowledged that France could not act without agreement from its European Union partners — the EU has a strict embargo on arms deliveries to Syria.

On the ground, Israeli artillery responded early Sunday after gunfire from Syria hit an army vehicle but caused no casualties, Israel’s military said, in the latest spillover of violence from the bloody civil war raging across the cease-fire line.

“Shots were fired at IDF [Israeli army] soldiers … in the central Golan Heights,” an army spokeswoman told AFP, adding that the Syrian fire hit “a vehicle.”

“Soldiers responded with artillery fire toward the source of the shooting … a direct hit was identified,” she said of the latest in several exchanges.

Israeli troops have fired into Syria twice before, responding to what appeared to be stray mortar shells exploding in Israeli-held territory.

Israel has complained repeatedly to the United Nations over the incidents.

In west Damascus, mortar rounds hit the mainly Alawite regime heartland of Mezzeh, in an attack state television blamed on “terrorist groups.”

Government artillery also bombarded the southern district of Al-Hajar al-Aswad, the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Britain-based watchdog, which relies on a network of activists and medics in civilian and military hospitals to compile its tolls, said one civilian was killed and several wounded.

Aleppo and its environs in the north also saw heavy combat, the Observatory said, reporting fierce clashes at the government’s Base 46 in the province, which has been besieged for weeks.

Syrian rebels said they took control of part of the strategic army base and that they had captured at least 25 regime soldiers during clashes with the military there. Their claims could not be independently verified.

“Several insurgent groups have seized control of a large part of Base 46,” the Observatory said.

During their assault on the sprawling base, which is situated atop a hill near the town of Atarib, the rebel fighters seized heavy weapons from the military, it added.

Amateur rebel video distributed by the Observatory showed the prisoners being held in a dark room, nearly all of them wearing civilian clothing.

Artillery fire also hit the provinces of Deraa in the south and Deir al-Zor in the east, where rebels Saturday said they had seized the key regime airport of Hamdan, a base for helicopter gunships.

The Observatory said at least two rebels were killed in a government ambush in the central province of Hama.

At least 50 people were killed across Syria Sunday, according to an updated toll compiled by the Observatory. Among them were 26 civilians, 12 soldiers and 12 rebel fighters.

Sunday’s fighting came a day after at least 142 people were killed nationwide, according to the Observatory, which has put the death toll in more than 20 months of conflict at upward of 39,000.

NATO Slams Syria, Holds ‘Emergency Meeting’ After Turkey Shellings

NATO Chief Vows to ‘Defend Turkey’ From Syrian ‘Aggression’

by Jason Ditz, October 03, 2012

Tensions between war-torn Syria and neighboring Turkey boiled over earlier today, when Syrian shellings killed five across the border in southern Turkey, and Turkey responded with artillery attacks on several sites inside Syria.

NATO was quick to scrambling into action, holding an “emergency meeting” which ended in a matter of minutes with a statement of “solidarity” with Turkey, and a pledge to keep the issue of Turkey’s territorial integrity on the docket for all future meetings.

NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen went on to condemn “Syrian aggression” and insisted that NATO was prepared to do whatever is necessary to defend Turkey from possible attacks.

The reality, of course, is that Turkey is much larger than Syria and has a much stronger military, and isn’t facing a real threat. Exactly what caused the cross-border strike was unclear, but it seems unlikely that it is the harbinger of a protracted Syrian offensive against southern Turkey. Rather the Assad regime, already struggling to handle its own civil war, is likely to try to smooth things over as quickly as possible, no small challenge since Turkey is openly backing the rebels and seems eager to use the provocation as an excuse for strikes

Clinton ‘Outraged’ at Syria Massacre, Slams UN for Not Imposing Regime Change

Warns Syria Cannot Be Peaceful Until Assad Ousted

by Jason Ditz, July 13, 2012

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed official “outrage” today at the reports of a massacre in the Syrian village of Tremseh, which rebels claimed yesterday killed over 250 people and involved a pro-regime militia conducting mass executions.

Clinton referred to the rebel claims as “credible reports” and later “indisputable evidence” that Bashar Assad was to blame for the deaths, slamming the UN Security Council for not having forced a regime change yet.

The UN statement also blamed the Assad regime for the killings, though locals have changed the story a few times since Thursday night, and are now saying 103 people were killed, not “over 250″ and insisted they were all killed by artillery, not militias.

Clinton insisted that history would “judge the Security Council” if it didn’t immediately accept Western proposals for regime change, French President Francois Hollande also slammed Russia and China for opposing their resolutions against Assad, saying that it was “damaging their interests.”

What happened in Tremseh, is, as always, a matter of intense speculation, as no independent media is on the ground and UN observers, which had previously thrown into doubt other rebel claims of regime massacres, don’t seem to be in the mix. The Syrian state media yesterday blamed a rebel faction for the killings.

Merkel slams Hollande’s approach to eurozone crisis

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel (L) and France’s President Francois Hollande at an informal EU leaders summit in Brussels, May 23, 2012

Sat Jun 16, 2012 12:27PM GMT

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has lashed out at France’s new socialist President François Hollande for his proposals for tackling eurozone’s deepening economic crisis.

On Friday, Merkel slammed Hollande for blocking EU supervision of national spending and supporting the idea of euro bonds and denounced his approach as “quick fixes.”

The French president has spoken out in favor of euro bonds and called on Europe to take more strides to shift away from the existing German-inspired focus on tackling budget deficits and public debt.

The German chancellor warned that Hollande’s approach will “mask” the divergences between Germany and “mediocre” eurozone economies such as that of France.

The center-right chancellor made the remarks a few days ahead of G20 summit in Mexico’s Los Cabos on Monday, which is expected to be dominated by the eurozone debt crisis.

Many observers believe that Parsi-Berlin ties undergo transformations following the victory of the socialists in France’s presidential elections.

The French media have highlighted Hollande’s Thursday visit to Italy as Paris’s new efforts to forge new allies to be replaced with the traditional German-French alliance.

Last Thursday, in response to Hollande’s recent meeting with German centre-left opposition leaders on eurozone policy, Merkel delivered a speech at the German parliament and argued that tackling Europe’s crises in the absence of Germany is impossible.

The new Syrian parliament speaker has condemned the United States for supporting the fabrication of unrest and crises in the regional countries including Syria.

Under the pretext of advocating human rights and democracy, the US interferes in regional countries’ internal affairs and supports terrorism and the fabrication of unrest and crises in countries, including Syria, Mohammed Jihad al-Laham said in a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Damascus Mohammad Reza Raouf Sheibani on Tuesday.

He lauded Iran’s sincere support of the Palestinians’ rights and the Islamic Republic’s cooperation on issues pertaining to regional countries and the Arab world.

The Syrian official said that Tehran and Damascus were in a joint front against enemies and added Syria could use Iran’s experience in overcoming Western economic pressure to confront sanctions imposed by the West and certain Arab countries.

In the meeting, Sheibani submitted Iran’s acting Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani’s congratulatory message to al-Lahm.

Sheibani said that the simultaneous opening of the two countries’ parliaments was a suitable opportunity for the further expansion of mutual parliamentary cooperation.

The Iranian envoy said that public support for the government and the vigilant leadership were among the factors that helped Damascus stand up to foreign plots.

The new Syrian parliament began work on May 24 under a new constitution approved by a majority of voters in a February referendum.

Al-Lahm was elected as the new Syrian parliament speaker in the opening session of the assembly.

Parliamentary elections were held in Syria earlier this month as part of President Bashar al Assad’s political reforms.

Iran slams Russian miltiary official’s remarks on US missile system

An Iranian defense official said that the statement made by Russian Army chief of staff Nikolai Makarov is in blatant contravention of the security of Russia and other regional countries.

The source said that the compromise over expansionist goals of the United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organization jeopardizes security of the region.

He said that the statement made by Makarov runs counter to the stance of senior Russian officials.

The source said that defense experts in the region believe that the US missile system which is to be deployed in Europe has targeted Russia’s strategic depth.

He said that North Korea’s missile program and Iranian nuclear program cannot be taken as pretext for the US to deploy missile system in Europe.

‘The sudden U-turn and overnight policy change of Russia on its strategic stand will undermine the declared policy of the Moscow government.’

‘Shame’: Russia slams soft EU stance on Nazism

Published: 23 March, 2012, 17:36

The Russian Foreign Ministry has expressed regret at the refusal by most European Union member-countries to support a UN resolution against the holding of pro-Nazi demonstrations and the glorification of Nazism

Since 2005, Russia has been submitting an anti-Nazism resolution before the UN General Assembly. Surprisingly, many countries abstain from voting on the legislation, or vote against it altogether.

“The UN General Assembly passes a resolution each year, based on our draft, which says that such occurrences are unacceptable, but this resolution is not supported by an overwhelming majority of European Union member-countries,” Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said. “I think it is a shameful position.”

The Russian minister then reminded that the findings of the Nuremburg Trials have no expiration date.

“We fought together in World War II, the rulings passed by the Nuremberg Tribunal have no limitation period,” he stressed. “They must be observed as sacred, the more so since they are sealed in the UN Charter, ratified by all European states.”

Despite the untold horrors of World War II, which saw Russia losing tens of millions of its citizens in the fight against Nazi Germany, Moscow continues to defend its tough position against fascist elements.

Russian officials recently expressed indignation over a statement released by the US Embassy in Estonia, which coincided with the anniversary of Soviet air strikes on German positions in Tallinn during World War II.

The American diplomatic mission claimed the Soviet air force operation against Nazi-occupied Tallinn on March 9, 1944, was “shocking” in the number of civilian deaths and “ineffective” from a military point of view.

The Russian Foreign Ministry was quick to respond.

“Regrettably, the American diplomats in Tallinn are once again engaging in irresponsible connivance with attempts…to twist the historical truth and to set the people of Russia and Estonia against each other,” the ministry said in a tersely worded statement.

Meanwhile, to add insult to injury, the Baltic States of Latvia and Estonia frequently are the site of parades in honor of Waffen-SS veterans, involving veterans from the Latvian Legion and the 20th Estonian SS Division.

In April 2007, a Soviet war memorial was dismantled in the Estonian capital, Tallinn, just before May 9 Victory Day celebrations in Russia. The move led to street protests in Tallinn which led to the arrest of over 1,000 people. One Russian national was killed in the ensuing violence.

Not all officials, however, are opposed to the Russian efforts to pass anti-Nazi legislation.

Council of Europe Secretary-General Thornbjorn Jagland said he agrees that the numerous attempts to re-write or falsify history are “unacceptable,” which refers to the Nuremberg Tribunal, as well, he said.
